Camera placement that answers a question

A field of view planning guide for entries and shared spaces.

01

Define the question first

“Did a parcel arrive?” needs a different view from “Was the gate left open?” Sketch the doorway, approach path and object of interest on a simple plan. The camera should show enough context to understand an event without capturing more neighbouring property than necessary. A wide angle is not automatically a useful angle.

02

Check height and light

A camera placed high under an eave may see the approach but miss a face or package on the ground. A low camera can be easy to block. Test both daytime contrast and evening glare from porch lights, windows and vehicle headlights. A trial image at the intended mounting position is more informative than a specification sheet.

03

Protect privacy in the frame

Set the field of view and privacy masks before enabling alerts. Avoid windows into private rooms and unnecessary views of adjacent homes. Make signage and notice part of the plan where other people may be recorded. The best setup records the area needed to answer a real question and nothing more.

QUESTIONS TO TAKE INTO A PROJECT

Before you choose a product

  • What exact question must this camera answer?
  • Can the target still be seen after dark?
  • What neighbouring areas should be masked?

This guide is a planning concept, not a product recommendation or a promise of service availability. Site conditions and applicable requirements should be checked for each project.
