Work backward from use
A doorbell clip used to answer a same day delivery question may not need the same retention as an incident record. Estimate the number of cameras, recording mode and resolution before choosing storage. Continuous recording consumes more space than event only recording and also produces more footage to manage.
Understand the access path
Ask whether video remains viewable during an internet outage, how remote access is secured, and whether an export includes timestamps. A local recorder still needs updates, backups and protection against theft or damage. A cloud service has different subscription, privacy and account recovery considerations.
Plan deletion and handover
Write down who can view, download and delete clips. Confirm what happens if a subscription ends or hardware is replaced. For shared premises, decide who is responsible for requests about recorded footage. These decisions belong in the design, not in a crisis after an event.
QUESTIONS TO TAKE INTO A PROJECT
Before you choose a product
- How many days of footage are actually useful?
- Can clips be exported in a usable format?
- Who can access recordings after a handover?
This guide is a planning concept, not a product recommendation or a promise of service availability. Site conditions and applicable requirements should be checked for each project.
