A layered lighting plan for one room

Use task, ambient and accent light to make a room flexible.

Warm layered lighting in a modern room
01

Name the activities

A kitchen may need bright worktop light for preparation, softer general light for conversation, and a low path light after dark. List the activities before selecting devices. One bright ceiling source rarely handles every use well.

02

Choose controllable layers

Decide which fixtures should dim together and which need separate control. A scene can combine them, but the everyday physical switch should remain intuitive. Test the lowest usable dim level and watch for flicker or colour changes with the actual lamp and dimmer combination.

03

Tune in the real room

Paint, daylight and fixture position change how light feels. Start with a few useful scenes work, evening and night and adjust them with occupants present. A good design is easy to explain: one action produces the expected room state.

QUESTIONS TO TAKE INTO A PROJECT

Before you choose a product

  • What activities happen here?
  • Which lights should stay independently controllable?
  • Do the chosen lamps and dimmers work together?

This guide is a planning concept, not a product recommendation or a promise of service availability. Site conditions and applicable requirements should be checked for each project.
